was wondering how to mask a 2d sprite via camera "dynamically"

I've been working with glass refraction 2d stuff, and basically I want an effect where (in a 2d game) the player character(along with npcs and other static non-moving textures) may move behind "glass", and a distortion effect occurs. I know how to do this but the issue is that when the player goes behind the "glass" the non distorted image is still drawn(over the glass surface). I want it to transition into distortion smoothly as any objects go behind a distortion surface and not have both the distorted image and the normal one in the scene at the same time. Anyone have any ideas as to how to do this? Thanks for your time!
