Particle System Access and On and Off in Code

I have a game where I have a particle system on a fire that gets cloned into the game. I access the particle system with

var fire: GameObject; var particle : ParticleSystem;

function Start() { particle = fire.GetComponent.(); }

I later have a function LightFire() that is suppose to play the particle system with particle.Play(); I have an error that says it doesn't assign the particle to the variable and it can't play the particle system.

How can I get rid of this error and get it to play the particle system that is a child to the fire I have placed?
